Lesson objective: Write inequalities to model situations.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill using inequalities. Inequality symbols are used here because they model situations that have more than one solution. This work develops students' understanding that an inequality represents a relationship between items that can have many solutions.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they translate situations into inequalities. They also differentiate between situations that represent inequalities and those that represent an addition or subtraction expression or equation.

Key vocabulary:

  • inequality
