Lesson objective: Compare fractions with unlike denominators using the most appropriate strategy based on the fractions being compared.

This lesson helps to build fluency with comparing fractions with unlike denominators. Comparing indirectly to a benchmark fraction is emphasized here as well as using common numerators or common denominators when appropriate. This work develops students' understanding that comparing indirectly to benchmarks, using common numerators, and using common denominators are all effective strategies for comparing fractions with unlike denominators.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (model with mathematics) as they use number lines or area models to find equivalnet fractions in order to compare fractions with unlike denominators.

Key vocabulary:

  • benchmark
  • common denominators
  • common numerators
  • comparison
  • denominator
  • equivalent
  • numerator
  • same-sized pieces
