Lesson objective: Compare fractions with unlike denominators in problems where the denominators are compatible, meaning one of the numbers is a multiple of the other.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with comparing fractions with unlike denominators. Common denominators are created here because there are comparison problems in which this is the best method of comparing. This work develops students' understanding that common denominators help us compare fractions because they compare same-sized pieces.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with Mathematics) as they partition number lines to create same-sized pieces and compare fractions with unlike denominators.

Key vocabulary:

  • equal
  • equivalent fraction
  • greater than
  • less than
  • partition
  • unlike denominator
