Big Ideas: Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) tells you the average distance the values in a data set are from the mean of all of the data in the set. Students know measures of center can help describe a set of data. Measures of variability are a new concept for sixth graders. The lesson helps to put measures of variability into context and use. These skills will help students to transition into more complex measures of variability in later grades.
