Lesson objective: Solve problems using understanding of the fact that the place value extends to thousandths, and its structure does not change.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of thousandths to a real-life situation. Students are asked to suggest two combinations of video game moves, each assigned a certain value, in order to reach the winning number.

Key Concept students will use:

  • When the place value extends to thousandths, the structure does not change.

Skills students will use:

  • understanding of the expanded notation of a decimal to thousandths

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they create a combination of the winning moves that will reflect the expanded notation of a number and amount to a sum higher than 10.

Key vocabulary:

  • decimal

  • digit

  • expanded notation

  • hundredths

  • product

  • tenths

  • thousandths

  • value of a digit

Special materials needed:

  • place value chart
