Lesson objective: Compare the values of digits in numbers.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with comparing the values of digits in numbers. Base ten blocks are used here because they allow for concrete representation of the concept. This work develops students' understanding that in a number, a digit represents one-tenth as much as it represents in the place to its left.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they create visual models to demonstrate the relationship between the values of the digits within a number.
