Lesson objective: Identify equal parts and combine them to create a whole shape.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of equal parts to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to work with a partner or group to find all of the parts that are equal. Students then combine those equal parts to make a whole shape.

Key Concept students will use:

  • Shapes can be partitioned into equal parts; a whole can be divided into equal parts such as two halves, three thirds, or four quarters/fourths.

Skills students will use:

  • Knowledge of halves and fourths (Grade 1, Unit 17)
  • Knowledge of thirds

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they combine equal parts to create whole shapes.

Key vocabulary:

  • equal
  • fourth
  • half
  • part
  • third

Special materials needed:

  • game pieces (prepared ahead of time)
  • recording sheet
  • scissors
