Lesson objective: Identify and name equal parts; partition shapes into equal parts.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with identifying and partitioning shapes. Regular shapes are used here because they provide students with multiple opportunities to partition shapes. This work develops students' understanding that shapes can be partitioned into halves, thirds, and fourths.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they use their knowledge of equal parts to identify correctly partitioned shapes and to partition shapes into a given number of parts.

Key vocabulary:

  • equal
  • fourth
  • half
  • partition
  • third

Special materials needed:

  • practice sheet
  • scissors
