Lesson objective: Identify and draw shapes using defining attributes.

This lesson helps to build procedural skills with identifying or drawing shapes given defining attributes. Irregular shapes are used here because it extends student understanding of defining attributes. This work develops students' understanding that shapes are defined by their sides and angles regardless of their size, color, or orientation.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others) as they use their knowledge of defining attributes to name and draw shapes.

Key vocabulary:

  • angle
  • hexagon
  • pentagon
  • quadrilateral
  • side
  • triangle
