Lesson objective: Understand and apply the definitions of the parts of the circles to answer real life problems.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of radius, diameter, and circumference of a circle to various real life situations. Students are asked to analyze each circumstance presented and decide which part of a circle will be necessary to solve the problem.

Key Concept students will use:

  • A circle is the set of all points the same distance from another point (the center of the circle).

Students engage in Mathematical Practice #7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they analyze each real life situation and decide which defintion to apply.

Key vocabulary:

  • circle
  • circumference
  • diameter
  • radius

Special materials needed:
