Lesson objective: Compute the mean absolute deviation of a dataset.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with calculating mean absolute deviation. A table is used here because it supports organization of computations. This work develops students' understanding that measures of variation describe how a dataset varies with one number.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of and persevere through problems) as they complete multi-step procedures to calculate the mean absolute deviations of datasets including whole and decimal numbers.

Key vocabulary:

  • deviation
  • mean
