Lesson objective:  Identify the defining attributes of shapes to tell how shapes are the same.

This lesson helps to build procedural skills with naming and identifying shapes. Images of shapes of different sizes and orientations are used here because they support the concept that the defining attributes of shapes are the same, even when the non-defining attributes of the shape are changed. This work develops students' understanding that the name of a shape is invariant with regard to its orientation or size.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they look closely at the defining attributes of shapes to tell how shapes are the same, even when their size or position makes them look different.

Key vocabulary:

  • different
  • position
  • same
