Big Ideas: Box plots provide a visual display of the distribution of a data set. This lesson has students working with a given set of data, then adding new data to the original set. Using all data, students will create a box plot to provide a visual display of the distribution of their data set using five data points. Students begin thinking about the display that best represents a data set and how this display can sometimes be in contrast to the measures of center. Vocabulary: table, mean, median, mode, range, measures of central tendency, dot plot, histogram, box plot, percentile, lower quartile, upper quartile Special Materials: None
