Lesson objective: Find the center, spread, and shape of a graph.

This lesson helps to build fluency with describing the center, spread, and shape of a dataset. Dot plots are used here because they allow students to visualize a dataset. This work develops students' understanding that datasets can be summarized by their shape, center, and spread.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with Mathematics) as they analyze graphs to describe datasets using words and numbers.

Key vocabulary:

  • skewed right
  • skewed left
  • normal
  • symmetric
  • clusters
  • outliers
