Big Ideas: Addends can be grouped in any order to get the same sum. Addends can be decomposed into parts and added in any order to get the same sum. In this lesson, students are asked to consider several different types of information to make a decision. They are asked to choose a class trip taking into account the amount of total time and cost. To compare the options, students may need to make multiple calculations. Students are encouraged to use properties of addition to make adding easier or quicker. Mathematically proficient students make use of structures such as properties of operations and place value knowledge to solve problems (MP.7)(2.NBT.7) Vocabulary: efficient, strategy, commutative property, associative property Special Materials: Optional - Print Supplementary Handout - Task
