Lesson objective: Solve problems to determine the area of a square or rectangle using the standard algorithm for multiplication.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of the standard algorithm for multiplication to a real-life situation. Students are asked to determine dimensions for sections of a restaurant with a given length and width.  Students must then find the area of each section of the resturant and make sure the combined areas equal the total area of the restaurant.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • The standard algorithm for multiplication is an efficient way to multiply that uses place value concepts.

Skills students will use:

  • Use of area models for multiplication; Grade 4 Unit 2; 4.NBT.B.5
  • Use of array models for multiplication; Grade 4 Unit 2; 4.NBT.B.5
  • Decomposing numbers to find a product; Grade 4 Unit 2; 4.NBT.B.5

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they choose a length and width for various sections of a restaurant and determine the area of each section.
