Lesson objective: Solve problems to determine the area of a square or rectangle using multiplication.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of multiplication to a real-life situation. Students are asked to determine dimensions for sections of a restaurant with a given length and width.  Students must then find the area of each section of the restaurant and make sure the combined areas equal the total area of the restaurant.

Key Concept students will use:

  • Place value concepts and properties of operations are the foundation for the standard multiplication algorithm.

Skills students will use:

  • Use of area models for multiplication; Grade 4 Unit 2; 4.NBT.B.5
  • Use of array models for multiplication; Grade 4 Unit 2; 4.NBT.B.5
  • Decomposing numbers to find a product; Grade 4 Unit 2; 4.NBT.B.5

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they choose a length and width for various sections of a restaurant and determine the area of each section.

Key vocabulary:

  • area
  • length
  • standard algorithm
  • width
