Lesson objective: Understand subtraction as taking from.

This lesson helps to build fluency with whole number subtraction. The game Munching Monster is used here because it supports students' understanding of subtraction as taking from and fluency in subtracting within 10. This work develops students' understanding that we can solve real-world addition and subtraction problems using objects or drawings.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they solve subtraction equations with objects and drawings.

Key vocabulary:

  • difference
  • equation
  • minus
  • subtraction
  • take from
  • total

Special materials needed:

  • cups
  • manipulatives, such as counters or connecting cubes
  • paper plates (optional)
