Lesson objective:  Compose numbers to 10 in different ways.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of composing numbers to a real-life situation. Students are asked to compose the number seven in different ways as they find the different ways Maya can put stickers on her poster.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • There is more than one pair of addends that can be combined to make a total.

Skills students will use:

  • Adding numbers to 10
  • Counting up to 10 objects (Kindergarten, Unit 2)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they represent addition problems with objects and pictures.

  • two-sided counters or two different colored manipulatives
