Lesson objective: Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number to generate equivalent fractions.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with generating equivalent fractions. The area model is used here because it visually supports multiplication and division of the equal parts through partitioning and combining equal parts. This work develops students' understanding that fractions are equivalent when the numerator and denominator have been changed by the same number of times.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (construct viable arguments and critique the arguments of others) as they make decisions of whether the equal parts in the whole are being combined or partitioned and whether that represents multiplication or division to generate an equivalent fraction.
