# 8. Generate equivalent fractions with models (FP)

Lesson objective: Combine or partition each equal piece of a whole to generate equivalent fractions.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with generating equivalent fractions. Area models and number lines are used here because it hightlights how to partition and combine each equal piece of a whole. This work develops students' understanding that equivalent fractions are when equal parts of a whole are combined or partitioned and the area or the location on the number line does not change.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (use appropriate tools strategically) as they decide which model, a number line or area model, best helps generate an equivalent fraction.
