Lesson objective: Compare and order fractions with unlike numerators and denominators.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill comparing fractions with unlike numerators and denominators. Area models and number lines are used here because it supports the relative size of each number and justifies the comparison. This work develops students' understanding that fractions are numbers that can be compared as less than, equal to, or greater than each other.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (model with mathematics) as they use number lines and area models to reason with the size of the numbers to form a correct comparison.

Key vocabulary:

  • equal to
  • equivalent
  • greater than
  • less than
  • order
