Lesson objective: Apply understanding of equivalent equations to compare equation solutions.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of equivalent equations to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to order of a set of equations from least to greatest based on the value of the solutions.

Key Concept students will use:

  • Equivalent equations have the same solution.

Skills students will use:

  • Understanding that the solution of an equation is the set of values that makes the equation true
  • Applying properties of operations to algebraic expressions/equations (Grade 6, Unit 8)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they model to solve equations using tape diagrams and numbers lines and then order the equations based on the values of the solutions.

Key vocabulary:

  • equation
  • solution
  • value
