Lesson objective: Create a scatter plot by identifying the dependent and independent variables.
This lesson helps to build procedural skill with creating scatter plots. A scatter plot is used here because it supports finding patterns of association between variables. This work develops students' understanding that patterns may emerge when bivariate data are displayed in a scatter plot.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (Use appropriate tools strategically) as they create a scatter plot using first a quadrant coordinate plane and identifying the dependent and independent variables.
Key vocabulary:
- consistent scale
- dependent variable
- independent variable
- scale break
- scatter plot
- x-axis
- y-axis
