Lesson objective: Apply their knowledge of precise measurement to problem solve.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of repeated measurement to a real-life situation. Students are asked to find a way to help the teacher fill in the missing number of links needed to create the required 18-inch paper chain.

Key Concept students will use:

  • We can generate measurement data by measuring a single object more than once.

Skills students will use:

  • centimeters
  • inches
  • length
  • measurement
  • represent and interpret data (Grade 1, Unit 3)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Students will make sense of problems and persevere in solving problems by generating, collecting, and interpreting data) as they measure and record the chain lengths, as they are creating the paper chain to find the missing instructions.

Key vocabulary:

  • measurement

Special materials needed:

  • glue
  • paper strips
  • ruler
