Lesson objective: Apply the knowledge of measurement to generate and record measurement data.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of measurement to a real-life situation. Students are asked to measure the textbooks in their desks and find the minimum length, width, and height for new desks.

Key Concept students will use:

  • We can generate measurement data by measuring several objects.

Skills students will use:

  • measurement
  • represent and interpret data (Grade 1, Unit 3)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Students will make sense of problems and persevere in solving problems by generating, collecting, and interpreting data) as they measure and record the length, height, and width of the textbooks in their desks to find the minimum requirements for their desks.

Key vocabulary:

  • data table
  • height
  • length
  • measurement
  • width

Special materials needed:

  • ruler
