Big idea: We can use a number line to divide unit fractions by whole numbers. This lesson introduces students to situations where a number line can be used to divide unit fractions by whole numbers. This task gives students a situation where fractional distances must be divided among several people equally. Drawing and dividing up a number line to complete this task should set the students up to develop a concrete and conceptual understanding of dividing fractions by whole numbers. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students' future work with division of fractions in sixth grade. Vocabulary: number line, unit fraction, whole number, dividend, divisor, quotient Special Materials: none
