Lesson objective: Extend students' understanding of unit fractions to using unit fractions to find one whole.

Students bring prior knowledge of unit fractions and their relationship to the whole. Previously students started with a whole, and created and named unit fractions. This prior knowledge is extended to drawing one whole given a unit fraction as students iterate the unit fraction to "complete the whole". A conceptual challenge students may encounter is starting with a part of a whole, rather than their previous experience of starting with a whole.

The concept is developed through a game, which helps students make the connection between the size of unit fractions and the size of the whole. The game also requires shading and naming parts of the whole so that students can practice that skill from earlier in the unit.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they iterate the unit fraction to complete the whole, noticing that denominator is the number of those unit fractions in the whole.
