Lesson objective: Apply understanding of adding volume of multiple right rectangular prisms.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of adding volume to a real-life situation. Students are asked to decompose blueprints of a swimming pool to find the total volume. Then students will determine the volume of dirt a dumptruck can haul to determine the cost of hauling the dirt removed from the swimming pool.

Key Concept students will use:

- Volume is additive.

Skills students will use:

- Volume formulas

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they decompose an irregular solid figure into right rectangular prisms to solve for volume.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (Attend to precision) as they convert between cubic yards and cubic feet to make mathematical decisions.

**Key vocabulary: **

- additive
- capacity
- decompose
- volume

**Special materials needed:**

- isometric dot paper
- unit cubes
- yard stick
