Lesson objective: Apply knowledge for writing unit rates in two different ways to decide who completed events the fastest.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of unit rate to a real-life situation. Students are asked to compare the rate at which three different students completed three different events in the "Rainy Day Olympics."

Key Concept students will use: 

  • The same ratio or unit rate can be represented in many different ways.

Skills students will use:

  • Decide which of the two unit rate formats will make it easier to compare ratios.
  • Scale ratios down to create unit rates. 
  • Compare unit rates.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they convert ratios into unit rates in order to compare them.
