Lesson objective: Apply knowledge of unit rate to determine which sibling grew faster.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of unit rate to a real-world situation. Students are asked to determine which sibling grew faster given data about height measurements and the year those measurements were taken.

Key Concept students will use:

• Every ratio can be associated with a unit rate; the ratio a:b is associated with the unit rate a:b/1.

Skills students will use:

• calculating a unit rate given a ratio
• comparing unit rates

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they identify the important quantities on the height chart and map their relationships so they can draw conclusions about which child grew fastest.

Key vocabulary:

• ratio
• ratio table
• unit rate
