Lesson objective: Solve problems involving proportional relationships.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of proportional relationships to a real-life situation. Students are asked to resize photos to a certain length for a photography exhibit.

Key Concept students will use:

  • In a proportional relationship, as one quantity changes, the other quantity changes in a way that preserves the multiplicative relationship.

Skills students will use:

  • Creating ratio tables to scale dimensions up and down

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they identify important quantities of the pictures and frame and map their relationships using models and ratio tables.

Key vocabulary:

  • proportion
  • ratio table
  • scale up / scale down
