Lesson objective: Apply understanding of how to create and evaluate numerical expressions to a real-life situation.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of creating and evaluating numerical expresions to a real-life situation. Students are asked to create and evaluate expressions and descriptions of expressions that explain moves made in a treasure hunt video game called Treasure Trove.

Key Concept students will use:

  • a numerical expression represents both a "recipe" for calculating and a statement about numerical values

Skills students will use:

  • creating a numerical expression based on a real-life situation
  • evaluating a numerical expression using the order of operations
  • using the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems, (Grade 4, Units 8 and 14)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1,  make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, as they create and evaluate expressions that must fit the guidelines of the task.

Key vocabulary:

  • evaluate
  • numerical expression
  • order of operations

Special materials needed:

  • order of operations chart
