Lesson objective: Solve comparative word problems using a tape diagram and equation.

This lesson helps to build fluency with solving comparative word problems. Tape diagrams are used here because it supports students' ability to interpret word problems and create an equation to solve. This work develops students' understanding that addition and subtraction can be used to solve many types of problems.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they create tape diagrams to interpret comparative word problems and write equations to solve them.
