Lesson objective: Apply skills of writing and solving inequalities to problem solve.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of inequalities to a real-life situation. Students are asked to find the best dimensions to construct a dog pen within the given constraints.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • Inequalities can be solved using the same operations used for solving equations.

Skills students will use:

  • Writing inequalities.
  • Solving inequalities.
  • Evaluating expressions using a table (Grade 6, Unit 8).

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they write inequalities and find dimensions that will result in the best dog pen.
