Big Ideas: If two quantities vary proportionally, that relationship can be represented as a linear function. Mathematical situations and structures can be translated and represented abstractly using variables, expressions, and equations. This lesson builds on students' knowledge of dilations and scale factors. Students are presented with the task of designing a football field and a concession stand on their school campus. Students will need to dilate the original figures and determine the area and perimeter of the dilated figures. Students will analyze and be asked to make generalizations about the impact of each scale factor on the five characteristics of the original shape, namely the side lengths, coordinates, area, perimeter and angle measures.
