Lesson objective: Students will be able to apply what they know about adding ten more to find combinations that are 10 numbers apart.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of adding 10 more to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to generate two combinations that are ten numbers apart.

Key Concept students will use:

  • We can find 10 more than a two-digit number without having to count, by adding a ten.

Skills students will use:

  • Using the place value system to determine if a number is greater than, less than, or equal to another number (Grade 1, Unit 8)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5: Use Appropriate Tools Strategically as they decide which tool or strategy to use in order to find their combinations.

Key vocabulary:

  • combination
  • more
  • place

Special materials needed:

  • cubes
  • hundred charts
