Lesson objective: Extend understanding that finding and describing patterns is connected to properties of operations.

Students bring prior knowledge of skip-counting by 5's, 10's and 100's from 2.NBT.2. This prior knowledge is extended to skip-counting by other numbers as students find and describe patterns. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is thinking that patterns always repeat.

The concept is developed through work with number lines and number charts, which provide visual representations of patterns and how to extend and define them.

This work helps students deepen their understanding of operations because finding, describing, and extending patterns frequently is based in properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others) as they analyze the statements of the students in the scenario and construct supporting claims with evidence.
