Big Idea:
Understand that every point on a number line has a value that can be found by dividing given distances into equal intervals.
This lesson builds on students' knowledge of fractions, decimals, and integers. This task asks students to find the value of rational numbers between two integers without having predetermined intervals. Students will need to divide the distance between -3 and -4 into equal intervals on their own to find the value of these numbers. Students should be allowed to pursue various paths to a solution here as long as their reasoning is sound. This builds towards students' ability to understand and conceptualize the value of any point on a number line as well as their ability to solve mathematical problems using rational numbers.
