Big Ideas: Recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes. This lesson builds on students' ability to graph points in all four quadrants and the opposites of rational numbers. The task gives a real-world scenario involves keeping consistent distance from the origin while maintaining one common coordinate. Students should realize that in order to be the same distance away the non-common coordinate must be the opposite of the original, thus reflecting the location across an axis. This lesson builds towards students being able to find the distance between two points on a coordinate plane and transforming geometric figures. Vocabulary: coordinates, coordinate plane, quadrants of the coordinate plane, x-axis, y-axis, integers, opposites, reflection, vertex (vertices), absolute value Special Materials: graph paper or premade coordinate plane worksheets
