Big Ideas: The distance between two points with either the first or second coordinate the same can be found using the distance between the non-similar coordinates. This lesson builds on students' ability to graph points in all four quadrants and find reflections across the two axes. The task challenges students to think analytically with the coordinates of various locations instead of simply counting distance. It is also designed to promote critical thinking while comparing and contrasting multiple routes and their distances. This lesson builds towards students' ability to find the length of sides in polygons on the coordinate plane and solve real-world problems using the coordinate plane to graph locations. Vocabulary: coordinates, coordinate plane, quadrants of the coordinate plane, x-axis, y-axis, integers, opposites, reflection, vertex (vertices), absolute value Special Materials: graph paper or premade coordinate plane worksheets
