Big Ideas: Understand that the coordinate plane is composed of a vertical and horizontal number lines that create an infinite two-dimensional space. This lesson builds on students' ability to graph points in the first quadrant. The task allows students to formulate their own coordinates as long as they follow the properties of the four quadrants. Allow the students to be creative, but be sure to use false coordinates as learning opportunities to reinforce what you know about the coordinate plane. This lesson builds towards students' ability to graph points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Vocabulary: coordinates, coordinate plane, quadrants of the coordinate plane, x-axis, y-axis Special Materials: graph paper or premade coordinate plane worksheets
