Big Ideas: The coordinate plane can solve real-world problems. This lesson builds on students' ability to find the distance between two points and the perimeter and area of polygons in the coordinate plane. The task asks students to apply their knowledge of distance on the coordinate plane, while translating intervals that are worth more than one unit. It also extends their ability to work with rectangles on the coordinate plane to include area. This lesson builds towards students' ability to use the coordinate plane to graph shapes other than polygons. Vocabulary: axes, coordinates, area, perimeter, vertex, distance Special Materials: graph paper or premade coordinate plane worksheets
