Big Ideas:
Ratios that represent different situations can be compared by analyzing and comparing the relationship between parts or the relationships between parts and totals.
In this lesson, students will compare two different ratio situations by building collections of equivalent ratios in ratio tables and analyzing them based on part:part comparisons and part:total comparisons. (MP.7) Drink mixtures will be compared to build an understanding of how part:part relationships affect the quality (flavor) of an overall mixture. This lesson will build upon students' prior understanding of multiplicative comparisons, fractions, and ratio reasoning, and toward future work in proportionality.
Vocabulary: part, total, ratio tables, equivalent ratios, and ratio notation including '3:1'.
