Lesson 19: Analyze how figures of speech support a central idea and contribute to the persuasiveness of a text

Students annotate the “Politics and the English Language” for figures of speech, determining the connotation of each, and then discuss how they support Orwell’s central idea. Finally, students evaluate Orwell’s use of figures of speech to determine if they stand up to his own rules for writing and if they contribute to the persuasiveness of the text.
