Procedural skills lesson: This lesson helps to build procedural skill in decomposing fractions and mixed numbers and writing these numbers in equivalent forms.
Students work toward this goal in 3 ways: 1. By using their understanding that fractions and mixed numbers are made up of unit fractions. 2. Through the use of equivalent lengths on the number line. 3. Finding values that make equations true.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) by exploring equivalent values of fractions and mixed numbers using decompositions of numbers into sums of whole numbers and fractions. Mathematical Practice 4 (Modeling with mathematics) is also featured, as students use lengths on a number line.
Special Materials:
Optional: Blank number lines
