Big Ideas: Functions illustrate real-life situations in multiple representations. Different representations can be compared using defining characteristics of functions, like rate of change and y-intercept. This task builds on students’ knowledge of functions and equations with constant rate of change in the form y = mx + b (8.EE.6). It extends students’ previous work comparing functions in the same representation. This task provides students with opportunities to analyze real-world situations and compare rate of change from various representations. It builds a foundation for later work with solving systems of equations (8.EE.7) and comparing linear functions with nonlinear functions. Vocabulary: function, rate of change, increasing, decreasing
