This focus question asks students to analyze the author’s use of language to determine the tone of this informational text. Students will need to identify figurative, connotative and technical meanings. In the culminating writing task, analyzing the tone will enable the students to understand the development of the central ideas as well as the author's purpose for writing the essay. This lesson establishes the author's tone and feelings towards homelessness which impacts the structure of the text, the evidence of claims, and the development of central ideas.
