The purpose of the Day 5 culminating writing task is to prompt students to think about how the colonists justified breaking away from British rule. By analyzing the text structure and by evaluating the arguments put forth in support of the American Revolution, students will gain an improved understanding and appreciation for this enduring document. The previous days' instructions explicitly requires students to think about both the text structure and ideas in this document. This writing task essentially requires students to synthesize the big ideas in the text. Special Materials: Students will need a copy of the anchor text. Students will need a text copy of the American Declaration of Independence.
