This lesson will encourage students to focus on the religious and secular vocabulary embedded in the Declaration. The document's language and point of view was determined by religious and popular sentiment of colonists at the time. This led Jefferson to not only discuss political ideas inspired by the Enlightenment but also Christian ideas. Special Materials: Students will need a copy of the anchor text. Students will need a text copy of the American Declaration of Independence (1776). The paragraphs of the Declaration should be numbered.
