The culminating writing task at Day 5 ties together each previous day of close reading. The task requires that the students show how Dr. King effectively uses rhetorical appeals in the letter he pens from a prison cell in Birmingham, Alabama. Special Materials: Students will need a copy of the anchor text. Paragraphs should be numbered. The text for this set of close reading lessons focuses on an excerpt from the original Letter from Birmingham Jail, paragraphs 1-11 only.
